Why Maren Ellis is a pen name

RefillMath is written under a pen name to keep the editor’s private life separate from the site. The pen name does not hide who is responsible for the site: the owner is identified in our Legal Notice. Everything published here is signed as Maren Ellis.

What Maren Ellis does at RefillMath

  • Reads the manufacturers’ price pages and the full terms of each savings card and direct-purchase program.
  • Reads Medicare.gov and CMS documents, and FDA information that affects coverage and cost.
  • Builds the site’s comparison tables and calculators, and writes out the formula behind every result.
  • Dates every price, links it to its source and reviews all prices on the 10th of each month.

What Maren is not

Maren Ellis is not a doctor, pharmacist, nurse, insurance agent or financial advisor. RefillMath does not give advice about treatment, doses or which medicine to take, and it does not tell you which way to pay is right for you. It shows the published numbers so you can compare them and ask better questions of your doctor, pharmacist or insurer.

What the site is based on

Everything on RefillMath is researched from public, official documents. Maren does not write from personal experience as a patient, prescriber or pharmacy worker, and the site does not present research as personal experience. We do not publish testimonials or reader reviews.

How Maren checks a price

  1. Opens the official page the figure comes from.
  2. Compares it with the figure on RefillMath, including any condition attached to it.
  3. Updates the check date next to the price, or the price itself if the source changed.
  4. Records any change in the price history, with its date.

The full checking process is described on our How We Verify page.

Common questions about Maren Ellis

Is Maren Ellis a real person?

Maren Ellis is a pen name used by the real editor of RefillMath. The person responsible for the site is identified in our Legal Notice.

Does Maren have medical or financial training?

Maren is not a doctor, pharmacist or financial advisor, and RefillMath does not give medical or financial advice. The site reports published prices and program terms, with a link to each source.

Why doesn’t Maren write about doses or results?

Because those are medical questions, and Maren is not a medical professional. RefillMath sticks to what can be checked against a published price or program term. For anything about treatment, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

How can I check Maren’s work?

Every price on the site has a check date and a link to its official source next to it. Open the link and compare. If the numbers do not match, tell us through the contact form and we will look at it.

Can I ask Maren about my own cost?

You can ask how a figure on the site was worked out, and Maren will point you to the source and the formula. Your own cost depends on your plan and your pharmacy, so for that your insurer, your pharmacist or Medicare can give you a firm answer. Our calculators can help you estimate it before you ask.

Is Maren paid by a drug maker or pharmacy?

No. RefillMath does not take money from drug makers, pharmacies, insurers or telehealth companies, and it does not use affiliate links.
